Could Flapjacks Be a Super Food?
Everyones’ flapjack recipe is different but the basic mix of oats, syrup and sugar are the same. The choice of what else you put in to them is yours. Common additions are seeds, dried fruit and nuts. This is why flapjacks although not classed as a health food do have some benefits. Recent dietary advice encourages everyone to eat more seeds, nuts and fruit. In fact these are some of the foods that are sometimes described as super foods. While there is ongoing discussion about which foods should or should not be called super foods (if any) the fact is that eating more of these kinds of things along with other healthy food such as vegetables has a direct health benefit and helps to prevent heart attacks and strokes. One thing to remember if you are making flapjacks for your children to take to school is that most schools have a no nuts policy.
