Blocking The Internet At Your Company
Your employees may be wasting hours of their time on face book, Internet shopping or just generally browsing the web but you should be careful before you put in too many technical blocks on the Internet. Although there are some very sophisticated content filters about, they can be expensive and it sometimes provokes employees to try to beat internet filtering systems that have been installed.
The easiest way to moderate Internet usage is to have a sensible Internet use policy that everyone signs up to. Make sure managers implement the policies and all staff are aware. Allow them to use the Internet in their own time for reasonable use, but also make sure they know all access is logged and recorded.
When staff know that their Internet time is logged they are much less likely to spend hours on face-book each day. Many firms circulate monthly reports to senior managers who can then approach staff who may be overusing the access. Generally though it becomes an inexpensive way to moderate the use of the internet at work, rather than a technological battle.
